Igorrit 0.086v9 x64 - Resurrection of the Living Dead

I was reluctant to include the 64 bit version of Igorrit in the tournament of the strongest chess engines because the entries were dominated by the Ippolit clones/derivatives. But, there was scarcity of strongest chess engines and remembering that one of my mission was to include all chess engines for historical reasons, the matches took place.

To my big surprise, I saw in the computer screen that Igorrit was defeating most of the modern Ippolit clones like Strelka 5.5, Gull R375, Ivanhoe 46h, LEOpard 0.7c, Bouquet 1.6, Saros 3.3b and others. It even managed to knock down Komodo CCT, ComStock 3 and Rybka 4.1, the strongest non-Ippolit chess engines.

Igorrit 0.086v9 x64 scored 56.34% with 958 wins, 641 losses and 901 draws in the 100 round gauntlet tournament against the 25 strongest computer chess engines. It ranked #8 in the gauntlet and #6 in the Top 100 Chess Engines as of June 15, 2013, higher than Firenzina 2.3.1 xTreme, Robbolito 0.21Q, Fire 2.2 xTreme and Ivanhoe 46h.

Igorrit descended from Ippolit/Robbolito with the first implementation of SMP (multi-core) support and was abandoned in early 2010 in favor of Ivanhoe. The reason was not very clear, but probably for convenience. The last Igorrit version was stripped of the Robbobases and the code was heavy with non-English text. Ivanhoe on the other hand, continued the support of the Robbobases, converted the code into readable English notation and added numerous enhancements that made it bloated.

Ivanhoe later was cloned with the names like Fire, Saros, Bouquet, PanChess and many others. This evolution should produce better chess engines, but looking at the results, Igorrit emerged as stronger in the rating list. Ivanhoe cloners should examine their efforts if they have met their objectives of producing better chess engines.

  1. Wow! This is a big surprise to me. I wonder if you have a moment to compile Ivanhoe 1945a (my humble mod) from the GitHub at https://github.com/Censor/Ivanhoe . I am currently testing my compile of it. Igorrit was once called a failure, but I now wonder if it was merely under-compiled, so to speak, just like Fire was.

  2. I compiled Ivanhoe 1945a and pitted it against Ivanhoe 46h in the 100 rounds - 1 minute + 1 second match. The result was 60-40 in favor of Ivanhoe 46h. Maybe Ivanhoe 46h by Peter Pan had improvements over the original 999946h by KLO.

The Igorrit 0.086v9 was the original released binary, The source code was not available, so there was nothing changed.

  3. John, thanks, this is a useful result! I made my specialized Windows 64-bit compile available today, but I know that your system won't run it, unfortunately. The specialized compile went +47-49=204 against IvanHoe 46ei x64 SSE4.2. Peter Pan kindly shared sources of his IvanHoe B46e a couple of days ago, so hopefully things will improve in the future.
